When Cirqu du Soleil first ventured beyond Canada’s borders, its powerful, singularly ambitious “reinvention of the circus” seemed quixotic. Inspired by European precedents, this was a big top downsized to a more intimate, single ring, as the French-Canadian troupe jettisoned animals, banished the usual fright-wigged clowns in favor of funny folks versed in (gulp) pantomime, and focused on acrobats, contortionists, and illusionists. Conventional wisdom would have held that such esoterica was doomed, but anyone lucky enough to catch that initial Cirqu production (or, for that matter, any of its subsequnt offerings) knows just how wrong conventional wisdom can be.
Cirqu’s creative brain trust, including “guide” Guy Laliberte and director Franco Dragone, have crafted each production as an extended performance piece framed by recurrent characters, unified production design, and underlying themes. Already mesmerizing visual tableaux and astonishing illusions are given an added poignancy (and, occasionally, tru gravity) by the productions’ underlying comments about society, conformity, beauty, and emotion; even without such conscious motifs, however, Cirqu’s sheer artistry is never less than riveting.
Quidam revolves around an Everychild, living with self-absorbed (and deliberately archetypal) parents, who’s whisked away to a vividly surreal world where Cirqu’s remarkable acrobats and artists take literal flight. Their tools are often prosaic–oversized flying rings, an open steel wheel large enough for a single inhabitant, skateboards, ropes–yet the resulting images are stunning. Injecting further drama and atmosphere is the score (here by musical director Benoit Jutras), which is as far removed from traditional circus music as Cirqu’s “acts” are from Barnum & Bailey. Performed with synthesizers, electric guitar, solo reed instruments, percussion, and voice (often singing in a kind of Esperanto that’s tantalizing yet foreign), Cirqu’s music can be dismissed as New Age only until heard in its intended context.
Like three earlier video productions, Quidam can’t quite achieve the sheer, enveloping wonder that its theatrical source does. But for fans of Cirqu du Soleil’s uniqu performance art, this latest presentation sustains the troupe’s magic. –Sam Sutherland

Spike Lee directs a flawed but fascinating portrait of the sports legend, actor, and activist in Jim Brown: All American. Interviewing former coaches, teammates, and celebrity observers (including Oliver Stone), and with Brown’s cooperation, this HBO documentary is best at detailing Brown’s early life. Briefly raised by a great-grandmother in Georgia, Brown moved to Long Island, where he found a supportive, predominantly white, community that encouraged his high school victories in basketball, lacrosse, tennis, and, of course, football. He encounters racism at Syracuse University, but Brown’s performance and pride overwhelmed all resistance. The Cleveland Browns chapter explains how Brown dominated the game, and then Lee ventures into his subject’s experiences in Hollywood and as an African American community leader. The film is engaging and disciplined until controversial issus arise–Brown’s alleged abuse toward women, for example–and Lee refuses to press. But in general, this is a good piece about a charismatic, dynamic figure. –Tom Keogh

3. It does not have a bookmark menu in the pdf guide. Printing it would solve that grumble too.
Other than that it is really well written and researched. The presentation of the kit is excellent and customer service is top notch.
If you are looking for a way to upgrade your thinking, keep mentally sharp, generate brilliant ideas and impress others by always being one step ahead of every body else, check it out. Probably no term in the exhibit industry is more overused and less understood than the word “portable.” Practically every display system from those promoting modular convenience to those claiming a “custom look,” reinforce their message with the siren song of portability. Why the sudden rush to jump on the portable bandwagon? The answer is easy — money.
Anyone who participates in trade shows or events has a portable display in their inventory. It may be a pop up or a banner stand or several table top displays. These are easy to transport, easy to setup, and easy on the budget.
Recently, the portable segment has added a new category — Portable Hybrids. Portable Hybrids are an alternative to traditional portables and offer several advantages to companies seeking either to downsize from an island display or step up from a traditional portable. Hybrids, by their very nature, are easily customizable since they are designed using aluminum extrusion, tension fabric, and modular components. Are they custom exhibits? No, but not every show or every budget requires a custom exhibit. However, every company deserves a custom solution tailored to their marketing goals. Understanding what portable means in the tradeshow industry can be a challenge. There is a saying “Like mothers, like daughters” and that holds true so many times. We as mothers have an awesome responsibility as our little girls watch and learn from our actions. The one thing that we as mothers do every day is put our little ones to bed and often watch them while they sleep looking so peaceful. Somehow, that instinct is universal to mothers and it does not just begin when one becomes a mother, but begins in early childhood as we mothers take care of our children.
Every little girl deserves to be able to nurture that instinct in caring for her “little family.” Dolls seem to be an early gift to a little girl but the next gift should be a wooden doll crib to let the child learn the responsibility and the habits of taking care of her little one.
There are many types of doll cribs. They can be found in stores, online or craft and toy shows. The best ones are made of hardwood and some will come with blankets and pillows. These cribs come in a variety of sizes, designs and colors. Some will be solid wood while others may be looking like a 4 poster bed and others may take on design of a swinging cradle. The one that I prefer the best are the wooden bunk beds.
Wooden bunk beds have advantages in the fact that many girls have more than 1 doll or perhaps there are two girls in the household and this bed can serve both of them. Also, when space is precious this type of unit comes in handy! Most bunk beds do separate which can perhaps benefit at different times. Most bunk beds come with ladders which every little girl will enjoy while walking her baby up the steps to go to dreamland.
Wooden doll beds and wooden bunk beds come in different colors as well. Some are stained, some are painted and some are left natural. I prefer the natural ones as it seems to look the best but also for another reason. When purchasing a natural (non-finished) doll crib, you can have the pleasure of giving it the color you want to match your living decor. That is a plus!
The wooden doll crib that I received as a child has been played with by my children and now is waiting for grandchildren to come and once again be played with, going through the cycle many toys go through…..getting passed on from one generation to another.
